Like it or not, people form opinions of you based on how you look. Maybe this doesn’t matter too much in your everyday life (yoga pants and messy bun all day) but it does matter in your work life. How you look influences people’s perception of your performance at work.
If you look like you just threw an outfit together every morning, you’ll give the impression you don’t care much about anything, including your job. In a world where appearance matters, play the part.
Put some effort into how you look in the workplace, especially when you want to stay on your boss’s radar for the next promotion.
Here are some tips on how to add some polish to your work wardrobe:
-
Make sure your clothes fit
You don’t want anything that looks too big and sloppy, or anything too small and tight. Find clothes that are tailored to fit you, while still being comfortable and not too revealing.
Not only will you look more professional, but you’ll feel more professional. Dressing correctly is a big confidence boost, and that’ll spill over into your performance at work.
Business casual pants and a blazer are must-haves in your closet. Spend some time finding pieces that flatter your body type and make you feel good when you put them on. You’ll most often wear pants, but a nice pencil skirt is great for days when you want to get a little fancier for a meeting or presentation.
We know work climates are evolving and increasingly becoming more casual. So, even if you’re allowed to wear jeans every day, make sure they are dress jeans, and still change it up now and then with slacks and skirts.
-
Get the right shoes
You have quite a few choices when it comes to work-appropriate footwear. Round toe flats are super cute and go with everything. You can opt for a pointed toe for a little more formal look, but flats offer both comfort and style. In the fall and winter, you can choose loafers or boots to keep your feet warm while still looking work-ready.
No matter what you wear, just be sure they look clean and are in good condition.
A lot of people say shoes are the first thing they notice about a person. Let’s just assume that your boss is one of them, so you stay on top of your shoe game.
-
Add a watch for added sparkle
Watches are not just for telling time, although that is a handy feature. They are also a great statement accessory. I have at least 4 watches that I like to switch out depending on my outfit of the day.
For work, you want something sophisticated and classic; probably in a neutral tone so it’s more versatile. Trendy is absolutely fine, just make sure it fits with what you’re wearing. Rose gold is hot right now and goes with just about everything.
I love bracelet watches worn with a few bangles. There are a million different styles to choose from; you won’t have a hard time finding something that is “you”. Go ahead, get more than one. You deserve it.

Your bag
You need a work bag. Something functional that can hold all of your important papers, your laptop, your lunch, and other personal items. Functional doesn’t mean boring or drab.
Quite the contrary actually. There are some really nice bags out there that are stylish and have lots of room for all of your stuff. The style you choose really depends on where you work, what you’ll need to carry, and of course personal taste.
A large crossbody bag may be all you need if you’re not carrying a laptop around. Messenger bags are popular too – and range from really casual to business meeting ready. A basic leather carryall bag is perfect for carrying to work. It’s simple and sophisticated but will go with anything you wear to work.

Jewelry
Jewelry is fine for work, but it’s best to keep it minimal and not too noisy. Wearing lots of bangles is both loud and distracting to co-workers. Instead, opt for a simple bracelet, earrings, and necklace. If your outfit is otherwise understated and neutral, chunky necklaces are great for a little pop.
